About Amritsar

Amritsar, which translates to "pool of nectar", has been named after Amrit Sarovar which is the holy water tank in the middle of Golden Temple. The city is famous worldwide for being the seat of Sikhism owing to the Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple – the principle place of worship of Sikhs which gets visitors from world-over. Situated in the culturally rich state of Punjab, in Northwestern India, the holy city was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das. Amritsar is one of the oldest towns of north India and has rich history and culture.

According to the 2011 census, the population of Amritsar was 1,132,761. The city is situated 217 km (135 mi) northwest of state capital Chandigarh. It is near Pakistan, with the Wagah Border being only 28 km (17.4 mi) away.
